Workshop: Hanji Lantern Crafting

event image

At Western Addition Branch Library, 1550 Scott Street, San Francisco, CA, 94115

Craft a Korean-style paper lantern using hanji, the traditional handmade paper of Korea, created from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree and natural plant fibers. Despite being a type of paper, hanji is extremely durable, water‑resistant, and versatile. It has been used for books, scrolls, fans, paper lanterns, paintings, and even parasols. Hanji was a medium used by the pioneering South Korean artist Yun Hyong‑keun— an artist often cited by RM (Kim Namjoon), the leader of BTS, as an inspiration. Yun even inspired a track on RM’s debut studio album Indigo titled “Yun” (with Erykah Badu). Find inspiration through craft programs featuring talented artists, makers and even your local librarians. For craft programs, all materials are provided, unless noted.
